It all started quietly enough with iTWire colleague David M Williams writing an article entitled “5 reasons to upgrade from Windows Vista to Linux”, with David being a strong and well respected proponent of Linux. Unfortunately, none of those reasons washed with me, I wasn’t tempted to dump Vista for even a microsecond with those arguments. So, being the journalist that I am, I countered back with an article entitled “10 reasons to stick with Vista and forget Linux.”
This piqued the interest of iTWire’s other major Linux and FOSS advocate, Sam Varghese, who took my 10 reasons and added 10 more of his own, culminating in an article entitled “20 reasons to shed the Microsoft yoke and use Linux”, while offering me the challenge to “Double or quit, Alex.”
Now, being the satisfied Vista user and good sport that I am, I couldn’t let this one slide by. In the spirit of having fun, which will undoubtedly be torn to shreds by the quasi-religious ravers of the Linux brigade, I’ve done just that, and offer to you my 40 reasons to lose Linux, and vote Vista!
Here we go:
1. Vista is far more polished than Linux, and in general, things “just work” far better in Vista than they do in Linux.
2. Vista has the widest software support, perhaps bested only by XP, for now. This includes the widest third-party software support, from commercial to free and open source software.
3. Vista has the widest hardware support, perhaps bested only by XP, for now.
4. Vista has the most advanced and widest range of security software available.
5. Vista has IE and Office, still the gold standards of Internet browsing and office work.
6. Vista has the best networking and Wi-Fi compatibility.
7. Vista has the best backup software and solutions for consumers.
8. Vista has the best games available for it.
9. Vista is the easiest operating system to use.
10. Vista has the best child safety software available for safe surfing.
11. Vista and Windows in general is what most businesses use, thus skills learned in Vista translate into the business world most easily.
12. Vista has the widest number of browsers and browser plug-ins available, thus the web works best in Vista. Including Google Chrome, at least for now.
13. Vista connects best to 3.5G phones to use their Internet connections if desired.
14. Vista has the best voice recognition software (although it works in XP, too).
15. Vista has the best power management.
16. Vista has the best version of Skype (although it works in XP, too).
17. Vista has the best compatibility with Windows Mobile smartphones (although, XP too).
18. Vista has arguably the best and most advanced Media Center.
19. Vista has the best Tablet PC experience, whether using a Tablet PC or an external graphics tablet.
20. Vista has the best “start menu”.
21. Vista has the best UI, although this is subjective.
22. Vista has the most developers writing software for the OS.
23. Vista has the widest range of virtualisation software available to run.
24. Vista has the most incomprehensible TV commercial starring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld.
25. Vista can run Microsoft’s OneNote, which only XP can also claim.
26. Vista has the best “remote log-in” software choices.
27. Vista has the best suite of software freely built-into the OS, as part of the OS and not a third-party add-in (as with Ubuntu and its suite of otherwise quality third party add-ons).
28. Vista has the best “taskbar”.
29. Vista has the most versions, although this isn’t a plus, Microsoft!
30. Vista comes pre-loaded on the widest range of computers, from low-cost to ultra expensive.
31. Vista has the best and easiest online driver finding mechanism.
32. Vista has the best error reporting to help Microsoft squash bugs, and the best version of “Windows Update”.
33. Vista has an SP1 that fixed a lot of earlier Vista issues, now in the past.
34. Vista fully supports the best keyboards, mice and gaming devices.
35. Vista is much quicker to learn and much easier to configure than Linux.
36. Vista is easier to fix if things do go wrong.
37. Vista has the best “System Restore”.
38. Vista is the most widely available commercial OS, and thus has the most support.
39. Vista doesn’t turn you into a left-leaning, anti-capitalist socialist.
40. Vista has Microsoft behind it!
So, there you have it. 40 rock-solid reasons to love Vista and vale Linux!

Only Microsoft products are plagued with virus issues. Of course Vista has the widest range of security applications, it needs them!
As for me, I got sick of Windows locking up, a long time ago and dumped it. And whats with Windows getting progressively slower as it ages? I mean I was reinstalling Windows once a year just to keep it running smooth. What a waste of time. Its substandard. People only use it because they don’t know any better.
I’m using BSD.
