I frequently setup systems and tear them down within a short timeframe for lab work. Given that it is short term, I normally don’t want to activate the software. However, with Vista the evaluation period is only 30 days, which is usually too short for a good lab. Here is a solution for anyone who wants to extend their evaluation a bit longer.
If you are using Windows Vista in evaluation mode (i.e., before activation), which is 30 days for all versions except the Enterprise version, you can extend it to 120 by rearming the countdown. However, you can only do this three times for a total of 120 days. This is not a violation of the EULA, so it’s perfectly legal.
The command is:
Slmgr -rearm
This will change the activation grace period by 30 days from the current date. The slmgr.vbs script is located in the c:\windows\system32 directory.
