Data Execution Prevention also known as DEP represents a new security feature in Window Vista. This feature will monitor Windows services and programs and protect harmful code from executing or running in your system. DEP shuts the program or service automatically when an attack is in progress and notifies you.

The default setting of the DEP is to protect Windows and not other programs. To have a greater security you can enable DEP on all programs and services. If a program or service doesn’t work well with DEP you can turn off DEP for that particular service.

To activate DEP follow the steps below.

Click Start and type Control Panel. Then click System like in we did in the picture. To maximize the pictures simply click on them.

Now select Advanced System Settings.

UAC will prompt you to continue and choose the Advanced tab (To disable UAC just follow the simply steps found in another tutorial here ). Under Performance, click Settings. Then choose the Data Execution Prevention.

Now select the Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select as shown. And you’re done!

Hope you liked this tutorial! Stay tuned…more tutorials will come!
