Microsoft: European XP and Vista users to get the ballot screen, too
Vista News 518 Views No Comments »Last Friday, European antitrust officials shared the fact that Microsoft was offering to provide Windows users a choice of browser via the so-called “ballot screen” option — something the Commission originally advocated — as part of its settlement talks with the EC. Microsoft originally was dead-set against the ballot screen option; officials said the company would rather ship Windows 7 with no browser included at all than to ship one with a ballot screen.
Microsoft on Tuesday detailed upgrade paths from old Windows editions to its upcoming Windows 7 OS, saying that Europeans will not be able to directly upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Microsoft is expected to ship special versions of Windows 7 to European customers, but the versions will need a clean install on PCs, according to a blog entry on Microsoft’s Web site. The software giant has released special editions of Windows 7 in Europe including Windows 7 E, which lacks a browser, and Windows 7 N, which lacks a browser and media player technologies. Windows 7 is scheduled for a worldwide launch on October 22.
Based on corporate desktop operating data between Q3 2008 and Q2 2009, Forrester Research is reporting that Windows XP is slowly being pushed to the sidelines to make room for Windows Vista and Macs in the enterprise. Windows Vista is now installed on almost one out of eight corporate desktops. Mac OS X has also made recent gains, though Windows’ share of corporate desktops remained dominant. Windows had 96.2 percent of the enterprise market, with much of that still accounted for by Windows XP. Nevertheless, the numbers are starting to move.
