Starting later this month, customers will be able to purchase Windows Vista Ultimate in a version that offers some proceeds to Product Red, a charity that works to fight AIDS in Africa.The Windows version is not entirely new, having been sold on several models of Dell PCs since early this year. In addition to providing some cash to the AIDS charity, the Red version of Vista also includes some specially themed wallpaper and sidebar gadgets.

Microsoft is preparing to release the December edition of its monthly security release.The final Patch Tuesday of 2008 is set to contain eight security bulletins addressing flaws in Microsoft Windows, Office and Internet Explorer.Of the eight bulletins, six have been rated as “critical,” the highest of Microsoft’s security alert levels. Critical bulletins often address flaws which can be remotely exploited by attackers to run code with minimal user interaction.

Microsoft has launched 63 separate lawsuits against people peddling counterfeit software on auction sites.The legal action targets sellers in 12 nations including the US, UK, Germany and France.Most of those Microsoft has targeted have been selling fake “Blue Edition” versions of Windows XP.Microsoft said the operating system was proving popular on auction sites as it is reaching the end of its commercial sales cycle.
