Microsoft will begin beta-testing the next service pack update for Windows Vista within weeks, according to a Windows enthusiast Web site.Testers have received invitations to beta test Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2), reported Neowin.net on Friday. Betas are expected to be released to invited testers, but not to the general public, in approximately four weeks, Neowin.net said, citing multiple tipsters.
As some of you may recall, Windows Server 2008 shipped with SP1 already installed. Microsoft made this decision in order to synchronize the Windows client and server release schedule. As such, SP2 will be released simultaneously for both Vista and Server 2008. Earlier this month Microsoft put up Knowledge Base Article 948465, a placeholder for both Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008:

CEO Steve Ballmer said today as he defended the first two years of Vista and claimed that its successor will be a major release.”[Windows 7], it’s Windows Vista, a lot better,” said Ballmer during a 45-minute question-and-answer session hosted by a pair of Gartner Inc. analysts at the research firm’s annual Symposium ITxpo in Orlando today.
